Lifetime cost of HIV management in Australia: an economic model

Background Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality, but the drugs can be expensive. This study aimed to estimate lifetime cost of management from Australian healthcare perspective. Methods A Markov cohort model, consisting 21 health states based on CD4 count line ART, simulated disease progression over persons living with HIV. We reported costs using 2019 dollars (A$) at a discount rate 3.5% per annum. One-way sensitivity analysis was used assess impact model inputs, probabilistic analyses were conducted calculate 95% confidence intervals estimate. Results The average discounted A$282 093 (95% CI: $194 198–421 615). largest proportion due ART (92%). most sensitive third- second-line costs, followed by probability failing third-line those <200 cells/μL. 20% or 50% reduction in patented would reduce A$243 638 A$161 400, respectively.
